The Theory Test

The DVSA theory test is a required, two-part, computer-based exam for learner drivers in Great Britain to pass before taking their practical driving test.  It includes a 50-question multiple-choice section and a 14-clip Hazard Perception test.  Both sections must be passed, with specific scoring requirements for each part, and the test covers a wide range of driving knowledge and safe practices, including rules, signs, road awareness, and vehicle safety.

What the Test Involves

  • Multiple-Choice Questions: You'll answer 50 questions on a computer, with topics ranging from road signs and vehicle maintenance to rules of the road and vulnerable road users.

  • Hazard Perception Test: You'll watch 14 video clips showing everyday road situations where a hazard has started to develop.

  • Break: A three-minute break is provided between the two sections.

  • Optional Practice: A 15-minute practice session is available at the start of the test.

Passing Requirements

  • Multiple-Choice Section: You need to score at least 43 out of 50 questions.

  • Hazard Perception Section: You need to score at least 44 out of 75 points in this section.
